The Birchwood Hotel sits in 2 acres of natural woodland and gardens with a generous sweep of lawn, elevated over the town of Pitlochry. The hotel retains much of its original character.
The grounds provide quiet seclusion, yet the hotel is only minutes walk from the town centre. Your resident hosts, John and Viv Holmyard, assure you of the warmth of welcome and individual attention which ensures your stay is spent in a relaxed, convivial ambience.
On arrival, entering the hall with its darkwood panelling, vibrantly rich wall colour, gleaming brasses and lighting carefully crafted to evoke the Victorian origins of the house, even the new visitor experiences a reaction of reassuring familiarity. For old friends, it's a homecoming. When his friends ask a guest where he stays during his annual Scottish holiday, he replies "with friends whose house is a hotel."
The comfortably furnished, high-ceilinged lounge displays original features, including glowing pine-wood panelling, tall, pine-framed windows and elaborate cornices. On cooler evenings an open fire welcomes you back from your day's activity and warms your pre-dinner aperitif. We're delighted to advise you that the fire is the only smoker in the hotel! In the interest of all guests, the Birchwood is entirely NON-SMOKING. There is a small, but well-stocked bar for the exclusive use of guests enjoying a refreshment or sampling our serious selection of malts and liqueurs.
Would like to have stayed longer.
This is a lovely hotel - full of character and charm. We received a warm welcome on our arrival, and our rooms were comfortable. Breakfast was delicious!
We would like to have stayed longer than our schedule permitted, and would definitely stay there again.
Birchwood Hotel, according to the Rough Guide "occupies a lovely Victorian country house" - a fine, Scottish family home, built in 1875.
You will spend some of your most rewarding Birchwood hours in the restaurant. During the long summer evenings the garden provides a soothing, colourful backdrop, occasionally enlivened by a visit from a deer, or red squirrels inhabiting the adjoining woodland. Naturally there is a selection of wines to complement every dish.
Some of our bedrooms were doubtless built for that purpose, but not even a Victorian family could have filled all twelve! It's easy to imagine a drawing room or study, perhaps a library or music room....so each bedroom is unique; no predictable uniformity - all are en-suite.
Since taking over in 1997 Viv and John have each winter undertaken a programme of upgrading, refurbishing and redecoration which will continue....until we start all over again! All bedrooms have colour-co-ordinated linen, curtains and bedding. Naturally there is TV, self-dial telephone and hospitality tray. For those not-so-warm spring or autumn nights all beds have electric blankets.
