Loch Rannoch, the second stage, after Loch Tummel, of the Road to the Isles, gives a first taste of the wildness which predominates further west. It is 10 miles long, scenically stunning and on its south bank substantial remnants of the ancient Caledonian forest which once covered Scotland may be explored.

A few miles west of the loch at Rannoch Station, the road ends and the wide, big-sky wilderness of Rannoch Moor begins. Suitably equipped, you can walk right across the moor to Glencoe or catch a train to the next station and hike back. For those who'd just like to wander far enough to sample the stillness, the emptiness, the magic...and breathe again - it's there for the taking.
And when you return, the recently refurbished station tea-room is, once more a welcoming watering-hole.
