osprey female

At Loch of the Lowes, just 10 miles from Birchwood, the Scottish Wildlife Trust manages a people-friendly Reserve where you can witness the annual drama of Osprey mating. Ospreys had been thought to be extinct in Britain but are now successfully re-established and the female at this site has to date triumphantly hatched 42 chics. I can't guarantee that this is the same bird, but she's probably led a similar life and can be forgiven for looking a bit frazzled! You can follow the birth of the chics, their fledging and first attempts at flight and learning to fish before taking off on their annual migration to Africa. The newly-refurbished visitor centre and the well-equipped observation hides are a delight.

Peregrine-falcon populations, in common with those of other birds of prey, are benefiting from more enlightened farming and conservation practices.
