Crannogs, the man-made islands possibly dating from 5000 years ago and found on lochs throughout Scotland, provided defensible shelter for those early inhabitants. There are several examples on Loch Tay. Most, like the one pictured above, could easily be taken as part of the natural lochscape. One, the Crannog Centre shown below, has been imaginatively reconstructed to provide a compelling insight into life on these structures which were still in use as recently as the 17th century.
