Perthshire is known as Big Tree Country. Woodlands abound, enclosing the Birchwood on two sides, in lochside walking areas like Faskally Wood just outside Pitlochry (above), in the remnants of the ancient Caledonian forest beside Loch Rannoch or the collection of exotic conifers at Diana's Grove, Blair Castle (below), to name but a few opportunities for tree hugging. The great range of coniferous and broadleaf species flaunt the vibrant greens of spring, the full, dark canopy of summer and the multi-hued splendour of autumn with insouciant aplomb.
